'Wonder Woman 3' Is Not In Development, Despite Gal Gadot's Teases
It's unknown why she chose to play like that
The lasso of truth has been activated on Gal Gadot. Despite recent claims from cinema’s most recent Wonder Woman that she would survive into DC Studios’s new DC Universe and get that second sequel, it is simply just not the case.
Gadot claimed DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran told her they would develop Wonder Woman 3 together, even though the film plans fell apart in the first place because they were creating the new DC Universe. According to sources for Variety, a third Wonder Woman film is not in development, nor do the bosses have plans at this time for any Wonder Woman-starring project, the closest being their previously-announced Paradise Lost prequel series starring Themyscirans long before her for Max. The plans announced for Gods & Monsters, the new universe’s first chapter at the end of January have not been reneged, nor would there have been any reason to believe so.
But what did Gadot say exactly? Well, all comments were made before the SAG-AFTRA strike which began on July 14, on her press tour for her upcoming Netflix thriller Heart of Stone, which streams on August 11, tomorrow as of writing. Gadot first made the suggestion that there was still life for Wonder Woman 3 in an interview with ComicBook last week. “I love portraying Wonder Woman,” she said. “It’s so close to and dear to my heart. From what I heard from James and from Peter is that we’re gonna develop a Wonder Woman 3 together.” The urgency to debunk rose just hours before, when Flaunt published a profile on the actress that featured her doubling down, claiming she was assured by Gunn and Safran with quotes that the film would be developed.
“I was invited to a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran,” Gadot said, “and what they told me, and I’m quoting: ‘You’re in the best hands. We’re going to develop Wonder Woman 3 with you. [We] love you as Wonder Woman— you’ve got nothing to worry about.’ So time will tell.”
Variety’s source made clear that no such promises were made to Gadot regarding Wonder Woman 3, nor was there any definitive discussion of her Wonder Woman carrying through to the new DC Universe. Further comment by Gadot’s rep has been sought. She debuted in the role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, with the first Wonder Woman being released shortly before Justice League. Her second solo film Wonder Woman 1984 was released in Christmas 2020, while a directors’ cut of Justice League, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, went to HBO Max in 2021, and in 2023 she cameoed in Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash.
While there are no plans for Wonder Woman in the DC Universe at the moment, let alone Gadot’s at all, Gunn was very supportive of director Patty Jenkins when she spoke up to clarify how the dissolution of Wonder Woman 3 went down. Even so, he’s still working hard for the character through other non-print avenues, getting Wonder Woman her first solo animated series.
