James Gunn Confirms Ta-Nehisi Coates' Superman Movie Is Still Happening
As if The Batman and Joker were going to be the only Elseworlds stories...
What an overzealous fandom can force a response to. Apparently, word had gone around that the Superman movie being written by Ta-Nehisi Coates and produced by J.J. Abrams had died under the new DC Studios regime. Well, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn put a kibosh on that.
Gunn is writing and directing the next scheduled Superman movie, Superman: Legacy to kick off the film slate of the new DC Universe he’s crafting in its first chapter “Gods & Monsters”. He not only assured the Coates project, rumored to be a black Superman story, was still alive, but reiterated the existence of the Elseworlds outside of the main DCU continuity, where stuff like Matt Reeves’s The Batman franchise, Todd Phillips’s Joker and its Folie à deux sequel, and the current direct-to-video Tomorrowverse exist. He called the film, which was announced in February 2021 “exciting”, and stated "I know that Chantal Nong, who is the executive on that project, is extremely excited about it. So if it comes in and it's great, which I haven't read the script, and if the timing is right, that could absolutely happen."
The co-CEO, who assumed the position in November 2022, is freshly moving into full-time duties at the company as his obligations to Marvel culminate with the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. He stated in January that Elseworlds stories were going to need to be of a special high quality in order to be picked up and invested into. Superman: Legacy is currently set to be released on July 11, 2025, with costumes, production design, and more having started work in-mid April. Oh and Gunn has confirmed that Guardians actors will be in the film.
