'The Mandalorian' Movie Gets Title As It Anticipates Production
The film was originally announced at Star Wars Celebration Europe in April…or was it? Also find out what related series confirmed its next season.
Star Wars is finding the way back to the big screen. Today the franchise officially announced its movie continuing and possibly climaxing the story of The Mandalorian, and it is called The Mandalorian and Grogu.
First revealed as part of the new slate of Star Wars films at Star Wars Celebration Europe, it will be directed by series creator Jon Favreau, who produces with president of Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni, the originally-announced director of the feature. This announcement does still list a Filoni-directed film in the slate, along with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and James Mangold’s that were announced at the same Celebration panel as The Mandalorian and Grogu, which heads into production this year. Below is the image released with the announcement.
The Culmination Of The 'Mandoverse' And The Return Of Rey Highlight The New Slate Of 'Star Wars' Films
This was huge. The fifth and final piece of the Star Wars portion of the Lucasfilm Studio Showcase panel at Star Wars Celebration Europe on Friday was all about the films. Star Wars films? Perish the thought! After all, it’s a place where the franchise, which of course launched with a film, hadn’t been since
“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” said Favreau. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting. Kennedy would add "Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen.”
It’s not yet confirmed whether Pascal will reprise his role as Din Djarin for the film. A fourth season of the series is also in development. If the mention of a Filoni film is not a redundant allusion to The Mandalorian and Grogu, that would certainly pull him away, as would his development on season 2 of Ahsoka, stealthily dropped into this very announcement. Variety seems to imply that The Mandalorian and Grogu is not the Mandoverse culminator, but Filoni’s still is. If this film is truly leading Lucasfilm’s slate, it’s reasonable to believe that it’s being targeted for the May 22, 2026 date reserved for this franchise, with the also-reserved December 18, 2026 being the absolute latest at this stage. To fall to December 17, 2027 would feel really odd for a supposed leader.
See More Devil, Speak More Devil: The Second New 'Doctor Who' Spin-Off Has Reportedly Been Discovered
Within weeks of Disney entering its partnership with Doctor Who, the money infusion the long-running sci-fi series would get was already being believed to bring spin-offs back into the picture, because showrunner Russell T. Davies believed the show was ready. And not just one, but a good handful, building even beyond what he had in his first term with
