Viewer Beware: 'Goosebumps' Renewed For Season 2 At Disney+
The horror series parallels 'Are You Afraid of the Dark?' by becoming a seasonal anthology series
The Long road has come to an end for Goosebumps. Disney+ has renewed the YA horror series based on R.L. Stine’s beloved and long-running book franchise for a second season. However, the show won’t be picking up with any of the first season’s characters. The news was announced Saturday at Disney Branded Television’s presentation at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour.
In a move mimicking that of its kindred spirit, Nickelodeon’s Are You Afraid of the Dark?, whose 2019 to 2022 revival consists of three miniseries 3, 6, and 4 episodes in length respectively, the ‘90s episodic anthology series has officially been reborn as a seasonal anthology series. A new story in a new setting with new characters is on the way, with the creative team intact, including showrunner Hilary Winston. The new season’s premise Disney+ has given centers on “teenage siblings who discover a threat within their home, setting off a chain of events that unravel a profound mystery. As they delve into the unknown, the duo finds themselves entangled in the story of five teenagers who mysteriously vanished in 1994.”
“Audiences everywhere fell in love with the series’ chills, thrills, heart and humor, making it one of Disney Branded Television’s most-watched shows of last year,” said Ayo Davis, the company’s president. “We can’t wait to dive deeper into the brilliant mind of R.L. Stine, and to collaborate once again with Sony Pictures Television, Scholastic Entertainment, and our fantastic creative team to bring an entirely new mystery to Disney+ for season two.”
Season 1 featured a group of five high schoolers, played by Zack Morris, Star Trek: Picard’s Isa Briones, Miles McKenna, Ana Yi Puig, and Will Price, as well as Justin Long and Rachael Harris. The Muppets and Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie director Nicholas Stoller and 2015 Goosebumps movie and Pokémon: Detective Pikachu director Rob Letterman developed the series and serve as executive producers with Winston, Neal H. Moritz, Iole Lucchese, Pavun Shetty, Conor Welch, Caitlin Friedman, Erin O’Malley and Kevin Murphy. James Eagan and Nick Adams serve as co-executive producers. This was the second Disney Branded Television renewal surrounding the TCA event, as Percy Jackson and the Olympians had its renewal for season two announced heading into the weekend. It is not clear what the show’s fate on Hulu will be, where it launched simultaneously to the Disney+ premiere in October.
