'Wizards Beyond Waverly Place' Season 2 Spell Cast At Disney Channel
The magic will continue for the Russo family
Wands up, we’re going back to Staten Island. Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, the sequel series to beloved 2007-2012 Disney Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place has been renewed for a second season by Disney Branded Television for Disney Channel and Disney+.
The announcement was made on Disney+ (and show, where applicable) socials. Set off by Alex Russo (Selena Gomez) and Harper Finkle (Jennifer Stone)’s “Crazy Funky Junky Hat” ditty from the original series, a Wizards Beyond Waverly Place Season 2 hat is passed around the cast, starting at Janice LeAnn Brown, who plays Justin Russo (David Henrie)’s new protégé Billie, giving a thumbs up, as does Mimi Gianopulos, who plays Justin’s wife Giada, while wearing it. Taylor Cora, who plays Billie’s best friend Winter, is all smiles before Max Matenko and Alkaio Thiele, who play Justin and Giada’s sons Milo and Roman, wear it too before it makes its way to Henrie, who shows his excitement and says the season is going to be “bonkers”. It will go into production in Los Angeles later this month. The confirmation came 31 days after the February 28 first season finale.
'Wizards Beyond Waverly Place' Trailer Brings Magic In The Lair
Disney Channel’s starting to look a little different as they go through a visual rebrand this fall, but they’re also bringing back familiar faces. Their Wizards of Waverly Place sequel series Wizards Beyond Waverly Place premieres at the end of Monstober (yes, the Monstober branding is back instead of Calling All the Monsters), and Tuesday saw them rele…
The more formal statement from Henrie, who also serves as executive producer, reads “I’m overwhelmed by all the love for the series and ready to keep serving this new generation of Wizards fans with more Russo magic, while continuing to deliver a big warm hug to the original fan! So many surprises in store for this second season. It’s going to be big, so stay tuned!”
The new series began with Justin living a normal, magic-free life with his family when Alex brought troublemaker Billie to him to become her teacher. How Justin became so disillusioned with magic and lost his headmastership at WizTech was identified as “the Unicorn Incident”. In episode 11, “Potions Eleven”, it was revealed that Alistair Goodspeed sabotaged him and caused his firing in order to take over. He was promptly handled upon the revelation, and the burden of guilt is lifted. We last left off in the aftermath of a face-off for Billie’s amulet against Silas Evilini that Alex came back for. The kerfuffle either awakened the boys’ magic or gave it to them at all. Minister Bigelow McFigglehorn, a recurring character played by Criminal Minds’s Kirsten Vangsness drops by to remind them that with multiple wizards in the household, the Family Wizard competition will commence, with Justin as Roman, Milo, and Billie's teacher, recreating the scenario of the original series with dad Jerry, Justin, Alex, and their now multimillionaire brother Max. McFigglehorn asks Alex if she has the amulet, and Alex hands it over. However, as McFigglehorn turns away to leave, her eyes turn red under the control of an evil force, though whether she’s the evil force or someone else is is unclear, but that was the cliffhanger.
The premiere became Disney Channel‘s most-watched series premiere ever on Disney+ with 3.2 million views worldwide in the first 12 days. Aside from Gomez, both parents, dad Jerry played by David DeLuise and mom Theresa played by Maria Canals-Barrera, visited in the first season. Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas serve as writers and executive producers, along with executive producers Gary Marsh, Jonas Agin, Gomez and Henrie. Wizards of Waverly Place was created by Todd Greenwald.
