Apple Vision Pro Is Getting An Exclusive 'What If…?' Story
How is it a Disney+ original if the episode is not going to be on Disney+? Well it’s coming May 30
So this is the universe we live in now. While we wait for the third season of Marvel Studios’s animated series What If…?, which seems to be next in the aftermath of X-Men ‘97 concluding its first season, the studio and ILM Immersive have announced What If…? – An Immersive Story, the first-ever interactive story based on a Disney+ original series to premiere exclusively on Apple Vision Pro. On Wednesday, the trailer was released, revealing that the story episode will premiere on May 30.
In the story, users will immerse themselves in the Marvel multiverse around them as The Watcher needs their help in facing dangerous variants. Sorcerer Supreme Wong will teach the player how to cast mystic spells, harness the power of the Infinity Stones, and join allies in epic battles. Players will encounter versions of characters like Thanos, Hela, the Collector, Red Guardian, and more, though whether they’re new or familiar variants is unclear. Players will cross between mixed and virtual reality as they enter new and iconic MCU locations that will remind them that time, space, and reality are more than a linear path. “As a kid, my favorite stories were about worlds beyond my own, advanced technologies, and heroes traveling across space and time. What If…? – An Immersive Story is the next evolution in how we tell our stories, where fans across generations can experience them and live out the adventure alongside their favorite heroes,” said director and executive producer Dave Bushore. “This experience kicks the door open to the Marvel Universe, and it’s a glimpse of what I’ve been waiting for my whole life.”
"What If…? – An Immersive Story is the result of what can happen when you bring together the incredible talent at ILM Immersive, Marvel Studios, and Disney+ to push the boundaries of technology in the service of telling our stories in new and exciting ways," added executive producer Shereif M. Fattouh. "This project touches upon the cornerstone of the desire that our studios share to constantly experiment and innovate, and thanks to the capabilities of Apple Vision Pro, we get to place you directly inside a Universe that means so much to us all. I can’t wait for fans to become the hero in this completely new way."
Look, the immersive experience might look great, but it’s essentially hyping up a $3500 paywall for a single experience and every way they describe it is absolutely silly. The game is produced by produced by Fattouh at ILM Immersive, written by David Dong and Phil McCarty, with music by The Marvels composer Laura Karpman. Executive producers are Bushore, Fattouh and head of Television, Animation and Streaming Brad Winderbaum, with series director and executive producer Bryan Andrews serving as consulting producer. Vicki Dobbs Beck, Vice President of immersive content at Lucasfilm and ILM Immersive, Mark S. Miller, VP of creative development and production at ILM Immersive, and Jamie Voris, the Executive Vice President Chief Technology Officer at Disney, all serve as executive producers.
