Dan Stevens Is The New Voice Of Korvo On 'Solar Opposites', Replacing Justin Roiland
The production cut ties with Roiland, the series co-creator, following felony domestic battery and false imprisonment charges in January, among other revelations
Last week, Rick and Morty co-executive producer Steve Levy and Cartoon Network President Michael Ouweleen revealed at Annecy International Animation Film Festival that the process was ongoing to recast each and every one of ousted co-creator Justin Roiland’s roles after Adult Swim cut ties with him in January following domestic violence charges, including the title leads. Over at Hulu and 20th Century Animation’s Solar Opposites, they followed suit, however their process is complete.
Dan Stevens has been cast as Korvo Solar-Opposites, the main character of the series, described as “a grouchy alien who always wears ceremonial robes… professes to hate Earth [and] desperately wants to fix their spaceship so he can escape to a new planet.” Stevens is first heard in the role in the season 4 trailer, which consists of the scene with the in-universe manner by which the voice change occurs, followed by the rerecorded version of the Korvo-narrated intro sequence. Solar Opposites also stars Sean Giambrone, Thomas Middleditch, and Mary Mack.
Stevens is probably best known for starring on Downton Abbey and as the Beast in the 2017 remake of Beauty and the Beast, the FX series Legion, appearing in Hulu’s limited series Welcome to Chippendales and Gaslit as real people Paul Snider and John Dean respectively. His film work includes The Guest, The Call of the Wild, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, Earwig and the Witch, and the Academy Award-nominated The Sea Beast. Cutting ties with Roiland also resulted in his removal from a third adult animated series he was executive producer on, Koala Man, which premiered in January.
Solar Opposites premieres its fourth season on August 14, consisting of 11 episodes that will be released all at once like previous seasons. A fifth season has already been ordered. Work on Rick and Morty for that crew was already into season 9 when paused by the beginning of the writers’ strike.
