Ready to go around again? Hulu has set a premiere date for the third revival of Futurama, releasing a 15-second teaser.
The streamer announced Thursday that the beloved animated series will return on Monday, July 24. And don’t worry, it’s not a binge. Episodes will be doled out on a weekly basis. Like with the Comedy Central run, production seasons are split to air over two years as their own broadcast seasons. This time, it’s 20 episodes, which were ordered in February 2022, split into two 10s. The 10 all-new episodes will have something for everyone. Newcomers will have no issues jumping on, while long-time fans will recognize payoffs to decades-long mysteries, including developments in Fry and Leela’s love story, the contents of Nibbler’s litter box, the secret history of evil Robot Santa, and the whereabouts of Kif and Amy’s tadpoles, born in season 4’s “Kif Gets Knocked Up A Notch”. Meanwhile, there are still going to be topical episodes like “Attack of the Killer App” for better or worse, with a whole new pandemic in town as the crew explores the future of vaccines, bitcoin, cancel culture (Zapp has it coming), and streaming TV. For perspective, Bojack Horseman didn’t premiere until nearly a year after “Meanwhile”, Futurama's previous series finale, aired.
The teaser sees the logo transform from Hulurama to the show’s actual name, Bender gives a nice squeezy hug, Robot Santa breaks out of Christmas lights, Nibbler gets high from orange dust, Calculon leaps out of the ground, Zapp gets waxed and Mom put on her suit. Futurama originally ran on Fox for four production seasons and 72 episodes from 1999-2003. It was first revived for four direct-to-video films from 2007 to 2009 which led to 2 seasons and 52 episodes from 2010 to 2013 on Comedy Central. These new episodes are season 8, or 11 and 12 depending on how you choose to look at it. The final episode of these ten will be Futurama’s 150th.
The series stars Billy West, Katey Sagal, John DiMaggio, Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche, Lauren Tom, Phil LaMarr, and David Herman, who all return. It was created by The Simpsons creator Matt Groening and developed by him and David X. Cohen. They serve as executive producers as well, with Ken Keeler and Claudia Katz. Futurama is one of several adult animated cartoons getting revivals, including Beavis And Butt-Head and Clone High. It’s not even Hulu’s only as they’re also bringing back King of the Hill.
