'Futurama' Embraces New Friend Time With Season 12 Guest Stars
Good news everyone! Grab your coffees now!
Futurama season 12 is coming on through this Monday, July 29 on Hulu but not before the oft-resurrected show had its panel at San Diego Comic-Con’s Ballroom 20 on Saturday. The panel featured producers Matt Groening, David X. Cohen and Claudia Katz and stars Billy West, John DiMaggio, Lauren Tom, Phil LaMarr, David Herman and Maurice LaMarche. In addition, the streamer released two clips from the same episode (to each other).
While I’m not sure which episode the clips came from specifically, the first clip sees Fry, the Professor, Zoidberg (voiced by West) and Leela (Sagal) break into a museum with a too-familiar interior to get into the systems for Bender (DiMaggio)’s NFTs. The second clip sees Bender producing the NFTs that Cubert Farnsworth (Kath Soucie), Dwight Conrad (LaMarr), and Mandy and Axl, Amy and Kif’s oldest children, sell them amongst themselves to drive up the value.
The season’s guest stars include returns for Bill Nye and Kyle MacLachlan as themeselves for the second time in this production season, having already appeared in “Rage Against the Vaccine”, and as a dung beetle in “Parasites Regained” respectively, aa well as Tom Kenny, who has already made a dozen appearances including as Abner Doubledeal and Fry’s brother Yancy Jr. Now, Nye is hosting the 3024 Inventors Awards, while the Fallout star is “enjoying a cup of the universe’s best Joe” confirming that episode to be “Planet Espresso”. This time Kenny plays a “gambling alien who forces our crew to play children’s games… to the death!”, essentially being the alien to set up the Squid Game parody in “Quids Game”, the season’s second episode, written by Cody Ziglar, and the centerpiece of the panel. instead of just showing a trailer, the stars and producers did a table read of the first act of the episode. Before Cohen jokingly overruled Groening and Katz to show Act 2 as a clip. They told the audience they’d have to finish the episode on their own when it’s released.
The other guest stars this season include Danny Trejo, Ana Ortiz, Cara Delevingne, Tim Gunn, LeVar Burton, and Neil deGrasse Tyson. Trejo will play Bender’s cousin, Doblando, who leads Bender to their ancestral robot village in Mexico. Ortiz will play Marquita, “champion of the robot matadors, Bender’s tutor in the noble art of bug fighting… and the love of Bender’s life.” Meanwhile Delevingne, Gunn, Burton, and deGrasse Tyson are all playing themselves as well, though Burton is in a far different circumstance. Delevingne has “some additional new parts” but still “a force in the world of future fashion.” Gunn is doing Milan Fashion Week 3024, Burton plays his own unlicensed hologram, and deGrasse Tyson is “solving the greatest mystery of all time… with science!”
Futurama returns Monday on Hulu (and Disney+ even domestically) with “The One Amigo”. If the series does not double up on releases during any weeks, the season finale “Otherwise” will premiere on September 30.
