Hey Hey, Disney Released The 'Moana 2' Teaser
Moana and Maui are back for a refitted adventure in theaters on November 27
It calls me. Well, the Moana Disney+ series was called to the sea of refitting as a full-blown sequel to the original 2016 movie. Wednesday saw Disney release the teaser for the resulting film, Moana 2, releasing on November 27. The teaser release was promised on Tuesday when the first poster was unveiled.
The overhaul happened fast, and it seems Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who returns as Maui, only just wrapped on his dialogue on May 20. He also uploaded the teaser to his YouTube channel and of course stars alongside the returning Auli’i Cravalho as Moana. They reunite after three years “for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she's ever faced." Let’s see how well the crewmates do in terms of character development surviving in the new format.
The trailer doesn’t quite give a sense of the plot but shows a lightning strike that Moana heeds warning to “This is a call from the ancestors to sail to new skies and reconnect our people across the entire ocean,” she says. Maui then approaches on her boat, picking up Pua and Hei Hei “boat snacks” before asking why Pua, the pig, was left behind on the last journey.
With this sequel and the live-action remake (releasing July 10, 2026) which both feature Johnson reprising as Maui, Cravalho has previously expressed just how much she loves the character is being utilized, adding “I love that Moana is a hero to all. It changed what it meant to be a Disney princess. You can be strong and brave and stand up against a demigod. It feels really good that more and more generations are going to be able to relate to this character.”Moana 2 was written and directed by first-time feature director David G. Derrick Jr.. Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, as well as Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina doing the music.
On Thursday, Disney reported the teaser was their most watched trailer for an animated movie in its first 24 hours, with 178 million views encompassing TikTok, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat. Though they don’t specify which trailers they surpassed, the films whose trailers were topped included Inside Out 2’s 157 million views, Frozen 2’s 116 million, and Incredibles 2’s 113 million.
