The Smiths Have The Lowest Butthole In 'Rick And Morty' Season 7 Cold Open
Ooooh whee it's just two days away!
Adult Swim went to New York Comic-Con Thursday as one of the event’s first panels. Renewal and pickup announcements were made, but they also showed the cold open from “How Poopy Got His Poop Back”, the first episode of Rick and Morty season 7, the scene that kicks off the season which premieres this Sunday, October 15 at 11 PM.
We know Poopy’s been on quite the spiral since he was recruited for Rick’s heist in “One Crew Over the Crewcoo’s Morty” in season 4 which cost him his professorship. It’s reached a point that he’s staying with the Smiths for a long enough time that the mooch has grown tired and it’s bothering most everyone in the family except the guilt-ridden Beth, whose shooting of Poopy he points at as the starting point of the spiral despite all the rising happening after his rehab. Space Beth does not share the guilt, maybe she got it out of her system in her space adventures. Poopy lays on the floor drunk, drinking, disheveled, and dealt drugs by someone Jerry is left to deal with. Beth has had enough, but gets annoyed when he tries guilt tripping and then following that up with a dig at the house.
His attention then turns to the audience, who he’s addressed after every one of his postseason stingers. Which I guess they could be if they haven’t seen the episode title, which most would even from the channel guides, or the episode listing on Hulu and eventually Max for those watching that way. He tells his story catching folks up describing what’s above and then turns it into an introduction to the season and tossing it to the intro.
Of course, Mr. Poopy Butthole was another one of severed creator Justin Roiland’s voice roles on the show. Roiland was fired following misconduct allegations in January that included allegedly sending abusive direct messages to a fan, problematic interview comments resurfacing and workplace behavior issues. Domestic violence charges that occurred at the time were dropped in March. Like Rick and Morty, whoever the replacement is seems pretty spot on. We’ll find out who voices all three characters Sunday at 11 PM on Adult Swim. The cold open can be watched below.
