'Power Rangers Cosmic Fury' Showrunner Simon Bennett Talks The Upcoming Season
How does a resurrected and Zedd situate himself in a world that went 20+ years without him?
Fresh off the news of Power Rangers Cosmic Fury’s premiere date with casting updates and a theme song reveal, executive producer Simon Bennett gave nod to the possibility (read: confirmed) that Billy Cranston, played by David Yost will not be the only returning legacy character this season.
Bennett slyly alluded to Entertainment Weekly that "it's possible" that Mick Kanic, portrayed by Kelson Henderson, “might get involved in the story along the way.” Mick debuted in season 24, Ninja Steel, a shapeshifter from the Lion Galaxy that Brody, the season’s soon-to-be Red Ranger, befriended as captives on the Warrior Dome that they escaped together. He would serve as the team’s mentor, situating himself at the Summer Cove High School Auto Shop after being mistaken for the school’s shop teacher. In the Dino Fury episode “Unexpected Guest”, he tracked the (Ninja) Nexus Prism to Dinohenge, where it was revealed the Nexus Prism was created by the Morphin Masters as one of the artifacts that created Ranger teams. Mick helps defeat the monster of the day and went on his way. Bennett is well aware of savvy fans online who find photos of say, whiteboards listing Mick and Billy or Mick’s stunt double with other Ranger stunt doubles.
Henderson has been part of Power Rangers’s pool of New Zealand actors since their second season there, debuting in Dino Thunder as Eddie for the episode “A Star is Torn”. The next season, SPD, he played major supporting character Boom, as well as voicing monsters of the week Bugglesworth and Devastation. He would follow that up with supporting roles for the next three seasons: Phineas the troll in Mystic Force, voicing Mig and Norg in Operation Overdrive, and Flit in Jungle Fury. From there, he would voice monsters like Sat Bot in RPM, Psychotick in Megaforce and Cavity in Dino Charge. His last non-Mick role was Red Ranger Devon Daniels’s Beast Bot, Cruise over Beast Morphers, where he also played monster of the week Keytron’s human disguise, Pierre.
The Dino Fury Rangers are heading out to space and will discover the power of the Cosmic Orbs. They are in pursuit of classic villain Lord Zedd, who escaped from the crystal he was trapped in following an encounter with the Green Morphin’ Master, having been revived the previous season from an essence at his most evil point (Once and Always gives a possible indirect clarification of what that entails). "Interestingly, he's going to set up his fortress/base on Planet Eltar, which will have some meaning for long-term fans of the show," Bennett flaunts, meaning not only is he set up on the homeworld of his nemesis and the original Ranger team mentor Zordon, but according to the Boom Studios comics, it’s his homeworld as well. The showrunner also assures "there will be Easter eggs and lore tie-ins aplenty for the loyal members of the Power Rangers fandom."
Unfortunately, Zedd has been recast again because Andrew Laing, who voiced him here, abdicated the role due to online harassment. A whole year after the back half of Dino Fury, Power Rangers Cosmic Fury will premiere all ten of its episodes on Netflix worldwide on September 29.
