Hugh Jackman's Wolverine Gets The Classic Comics-Accurate Suit At Last In New Image From 'Deadpool 3'
It's an image that's giving you everything
It’ll have been nearly 25 years since Hugh Jackman first suited up as Wolverine for the first X-Men movie by the time Deadpool 3 releases next year. The film series would become so notoriously averse to the suits that come from the comics that it didn’t start using the X-Uniforms until the final entry, Dark Phoenix in 2019. Now, Hugh Jackman’s taking the biggest step in his return.
On Monday, Hugh, Ryan, and the official Deadpool movie account released the first official image, which the movie socials captioned “Now in Hugh Res”. It sees Deadpool fully suited up, alongside Wolverine sporting his classic yellow-and-blue costume. Logan’s mask isn’t on, but surely it’s somewhere. It’s not quite confirmed it’s a multiversal variant but it seems widely believed to be, especially as Jackman has assured over and over again that this appearance would not screw with Logan, his original final outing as the character.
That image might be the last we hear from the production for a while. Preparations for a SAG-AFTRA strike have escalated. While Deadpool 3 is currently in production, it probably won’t be for long due to that. Directed by Shawn Levy, who also directed Reynolds in Free Guy and The Adam Project, the specifics of the plot are still unknown. It brings Deadpool into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the first two installments having been produced at 20th Century Fox before Disney’s acquisition. Subsequent photos suggest a destruction of the former being part of the plot.
Much of the supporting cast of the previous installments, such as Morena Baccarin as Wade’s girlfriend Vanessa Carlysle, Stefan Kapičić as Colossus, Karan Soni as driver sidekick Dopinder, Leslie Uggams as roommate Blind Al, Rob Delaney as human X-Force member Peter, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Warhead and Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio, return, while Emma Corrin joins as the film’s villain, and Matthew Mcfadyen is in an unknown role. The multiversal aspect of the film was reinforced over the weekend when it was revealed that Jennifer Garner would be appearing as Elektra, returning to the role after nearly 20 years.
The incorporation of the X-Men into the MCU has been rather gradual, starting with Evan Peters’s charmed appearance as Pietro in WandaVision, to Patrick Stewart playing Earth-838’s Illuminati member Professor Charles Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, with an animated series-accurate hoverchair, complete with said series theme song, which also played when Kamala Khan was revealed to be a mutant in Ms. Marvel. The team’s first film has yet to be scheduled.
Reynolds, Levy, Paul Wernick, Rhett Reese and Zeb Wells are the credited writers. Deadpool 3 is currently set to be released May 3, 2024.
