Netflix Releases Trailer For 'Scott Pilgrim Takes Off' Anime With Original Cast
This is quite the animated Sex Bob-Omb reunion tour...
As Netflix cancels animated series like Dead End: Paranormal Park, Inside Job, and even Ridley Jones, and Disenchantment and Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight meet more natural ends, they’ve chosen an intriguing way to retain animation fans. The streamer has announced a Scott Pilgrim anime, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off along with its cast and release date, and released a teaser.
Announced in March, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is created, written and executive produced by original creator Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski. It’s being animated by anime house Science SARU, using the style of O’Malley’s original graphic novels. And as hyped at the announcement, it’s bringing back the entire original cast. That means Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona Flowers, Kieran Culkin as Scott’s friend Wallace Wells, Anna Kendrick as Scott’s sister Stacey, Brie Larson as Envy Adams, Alison Pill as Kim Pine, Aubrey Plaza as Julie Powers, Johnny Simmons as young Neil, Mark Webber as Stephen Stills, Ellen Wong as Knives Chau and of course the Evil Exes, or at least five of them: Chris Evans as Lucas Lee, Brandon Routh as Todd Ingram, Jason Schwartzman as Gideon "G-Man" Graves, Mae Whitman as Roxy Richter, and Satya Bhabha as Matthew Patel.
“They’ve all gone on to do incredible things, but to me, they’re family,” O’Malley says of how he was able to get the cast back. The series is also executive produced by vs. the World’s director, writer and producer Edgar Wright, who knew bringing in the original cast was a foregone conclusion. “Luckily, the Scott Pilgrim cast became a close-knit family and friendships were forged for life,” he tells Tudum. “There — to this day — is still a group email with the entire cast on it, that’s been going since 2010. I was happy to be able to reach out to everyone with the news that we had finally come up with a way to continue the adventure. Seeing (and hearing) everyone come back to their roles has been a true pleasure.”
While the teaser showed many familiar scenes, it is not an animated remake, as Wright assured in March “Over the years fans had asked if there would be a sequel to the film or some other kind of continuation. I knew that a live action sequel was unlikely, but I would usually defer by suggesting that perhaps an anime adaptation was an interesting way to go. And then, lo and behold, one day Netflix got in touch to ask about this exact idea. But even better, our… Bryan Lee O’Malley had an idea that was way more adventurous than just a straight adaptation of the original books.”
Marc Platt, Jared LeBoff, Adam Siegel Michael Bacall, Nira Park and Eunyoung Choi also serve as executive producers. Abel Góngora, whose work includes the "T0-B1" short from Star Wars: Visions also done by the studio, as well as the “Food Chain” episode of Adventure Time will serve as director. The pop-rock band Anamanaguchi will provide the original songs and score the series with Straight Outta Compton’s Joseph Trapanese.
The eight episode season will premiere on November 17. Check out the Scott Pilgrim Takes Off teaser below and images above.
